Through funding from the United States Department of Education, the Center for African Studies offers Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, providing tuition and stipend support for full-time Harvard College students interested in intensive for-credit study of an African language in the United States or abroad.
FLAS Fellowships provide for up to $5,000 towards tuition, and a $3,500 fixed living stipend. Candidates and alternates are selected by Faculty Committee members and must be approved by the US Department of Education before the Fellowship can be finalized. Students who wish to attend an immersive language program on the African continent must be at the intermediate language level. Please review the full list of eligibility requirements below. Eligibility:
- Applicant must be a US citizen, US national, or US permanent resident
- Applicant must be pursuing an immersive language program that is at least six weeks in duration and offers at least 140 contact hours
- Applicant may not receive concurrent federal support from other sources, except student loans and work/study
- Summer Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Grants support intermediate and advanced-level study only
- Applicants must obtain Harvard transfer credit approval
- Applicants must be continuing full-time students enrolled at Harvard College

DEADLINE for FLAS Summer Grants: February 15, 2024 at 11:59 pm (EST)
- Award recipients must complete pre- and post-program self-assessments
- Award recipients must undergo pre- and post-program evaluation by a language instructor
- Complete CARAT application form, including the Summer FLAS Supplemental Application
- Current resume/CV
- Two letters of recommendation (one from a language instructor and one from an area studies instructor). Letters of recommendation should also be submitted through CARAT by the grant deadline.
