Undergraduate Student Funding
The Center for African Studies offers a variety of funding and internship opportunities. Our competitive funding opportunities provide financial support for students hoping to travel to the African continent for research, internships, study abroad programs, volunteer projects, or immersive language programs during the winter break or summer. CAS also works closely with Africa-based organizations to offer summer internship programs in various countries.
Funding Opportunities
Winter Travel Grants
Undergraduate students may apply for up to $3,000 in funding for travel to Africa for senior thesis research, internships, or special projects during winter break.
Summer Travel Grants
The Center for African Studies offers summer funding to Harvard undergraduate students traveling to Africa for thesis research, internships, volunteer work, or study abroad. Grants require a minimum stay of eight weeks in Africa. Grant awards range from $3,500 - $6,000.
Internships in Africa
Art School Africa Internship Program
Art School Africa is a registered non-profit organization committed to supporting aspiring art practitioners across the African continent as they embark on their professional careers. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Harvard interns support the organizations educational programming through research, event support, and communications.
CJLF Global Innovation and Education Internship Program
The Calestous Juma Legacy Foundation (CJLF) was founded to honor the legacy of the late Professor Calestous Juma—a renowned HKS professor and global authority on science, technology, and sustainable developmen. CJLF empowers communities to chart their own path to prosperity. Interns will work at the Calestous Juma Innovation & Resource Hub, an African-led center bringing foundational relevant digital skills to a remote community on Lake Victoria.
Maru-a-Pula Internship Program
One of Southern Africa’s top secondary schools, Maru-a-Pula collaborates with the Center for African Studies to engage Harvard students during the summer to share their experiences and expertise with students. The Center for African Studies and Maru-a-Pula seek capable students prepared to take on a variety of student mentorship roles including tutoring, mentoring, and extracurricular advising.
On The Move e.V. Global Mental Health Internship Program
On The Move e.V. is a Germany-based non-profit organization dedicated to fostering global collaboration and capacity-building in mental health. Interns will have the opportunity to engage directly in mental health work at the community and clinical levels in Ghana or Kenya.
