The Scramble for Revenue: Fiscal Capacity and Forced Labor in Colonial Africa.
Date and Time
Join us for an African Studies Workshop with Marlous van Waijenburg, Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, presenting The Scramble for Revenue: Fiscal Capacity and Forced Labor in Colonial Africa.
Van Waijenburg’s research examines comparative economic development, with particular attention to the long-run development of African economies and their connections to the global economy. Her work spans fiscal capacity and taxation, labor markets, coercive labor institutions, inequality, and the business history of the transatlantic slave trade.
In this workshop, she will explore the relationship between colonial revenue systems, state capacity, and forced labor in Africa, examining how colonial governments sought to expand their fiscal reach and the coercive institutions that accompanied those efforts.
