Learn from Dr. Pokines about his fascinating work studying bones. You may find out it's not exactly as shows like CSI depict, but people find bones all the time, and someone needs to find out what happened to them, even if it was 2 million years ago. Dr. Pokines will present "Forensic Paleoanthropology and the Site of Malapa, South Africa," about his work to determine cause of death using forensic analysis of fossil specimens of Australopithecus sediba found in a cave. His analysis indicates the two individuals were alive when they fell into the cave. Biomechanical analysis of the breakage on the bones also shows that one individual may have been actively bracing for impact. This analysis contributes to our growing body of data regarding how fossils were introduced into ancient cave sites (under the scientific field of taphonomy) and therefore frames our interpretation of these specimens and species beha.
