Buna Break x Africa Summer Internship Info Session

Join us on Tuesday, February 3rd, from 4:00pm - 5:30pm for our first Buna Coffee Break of the year and an Info Session on our Summer 2026 Internship programs! 

Buna Break will begin starting at 4pm with delicious African coffee from Ethiopia and Kenya, as well as cookies. The internship info-session will start at 4:30pm. Our Student Support and Outreach Officer, Lindsay Moats, will be available to answer your questions about CAS internship programs and research funding before and after the presentation. We will also have a representative from the Celestous Juma Legacy Foundation (CJLF) in attendance to share more details about a new program in Kenya available this coming summer.  

*All of our internship programs are unpaid but come with a travel and living stipend to cover the cost of the program for Harvard College students. Harvard graduate students who have an interest in any of the programs should contact Lindsay Moats. Graduate students may have an opportunity to apply but will have to find their own funding. The Shamiri program offers funding for both graduate and undergraduate students. 

Join us to learn more about the following eight-week summer (June-July) programs: 

The Maru-A-Pula (MaP) Internship Program | Gaborone, Botswana 
Tutor, teach, and mentor students at a local boarding school in Gaborone and participate in local service-learning and extracurricular activities! This program is ideal for students who have an interest in learning about education systems in Africa and enjoy working with youth. Students also have multiple opportunities to travel throughout southern Africa. 

The Art School Africa (ASA) Internship Program | Cape Town, South Africa + Luanda, Angola
ASA is a non-profit committed to supporting aspiring art practitioners across the African continent as they embark on their professional careers. Harvard interns conduct research and assist with communications, marketing, and event planning to support the organization’s mission to address the structural barriers that limit opportunities and access to educational resources for professional art practice. This summer, students will spend 5-6 weeks in Cape Town, South Africa followed by 2-3 weeks in Luanda, Angola. This program is ideal for students who have a strong interest in Art and Africa studies plus experience conducting qualitative research and writing research reports. Portuguese language experience will help you navigate the portion of the program in Luanda but is not required. 

Shamiri Internship Program | Nairobi, Kenya
This program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students passionate about advancing youth mental health through research, data, and programmatic support. Participants will gain hands-on experience contributing to cutting-edge research and program implementation at Shamiri Institute, a youth-led, data-driven nonprofit organization addressing mental health challenges among adolescents in Sub-Saharan Africa. Preference will be given to applicants with backgrounds in psychology, public health, data science, and other related disciplines.

CJLF Global Innovation and Education Internship | Port Victoria, Kenya (New!)
This is a unique opportunity to work directly on the ground in East Africa, contributing to a proven model of community-led development. The Calestous Juma Innovation & Resource Hub in rural Kenya, is an African-led center bringing foundational relevant digital skills to a remote community on the shores of beautiful Lake Victoria. Interns will support the organization through digital skills training, impact assessment, digital storytelling, and alumni engagement. This program is funded for undergraduate students. If you are a graduate student and are interested in participating, you may apply but will need to secure your own funding if you are selected for the program.  

On the Move e.V Global Mental Health Internship Program | Kenya or Ghana (New!)
Interns will have the opportunity to engage directly in mental health work at the community and clinical levels. Day-to-day activities may include shadowing and assisting mental health professionals in hospitals or community outreach programs, contributing to educational sessions, and supporting the design or implementation of mental health interventions. Depending on interests and local needs, interns may also participate in applied research projects focused on policy development, program evaluation, or curriculum co-design. The internship follows a structured but flexible format, emphasizing hands-on experience, reflection, and cross-cultural learning. If you are a graduate student and are interested in participating, you may apply but will need to secure your own funding if you are selected for the program.
