Riina Turtio, non-resident postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard University Center for African Studies, has recently completed a PhD in International History at the Graduate Institute in Geneva. Her PhD dissertation approached the wider topic of decolonization and state-building in francophone West Africa by analyzing Guinean, Ivoirian and Voltaic decisions in building their national militaries. James Ferguson is the Susan S. and William H. Hindle Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences, and Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University. Professor Lidwien Kapteijns (Wellesley College) will lead a discussion about methodology and primary sources for students of Islamic Africa.  Participants are invited to read and comment on Kapteijns and Vianello’s ongoing research about a particular genre of Islamic Sufi sources from 19th- and 20th-century Brava (on Somalia’s Benadir coast).  Through her paper, Professor Kapteijns will explore the challenges of using primary sources in local languages (including Arabic) to address broader themes in the study of Islamic Africa.
