Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, shared his vision for a vibrant and entrepreneurial Africa with the Harvard community. He highlighted the untapped and under-recognized potential sub-Saharan African economies possess, despite the challenges they face. Screening of Beasts of No Nation

On October 18th, the Center for African Studies, the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research, and the Department of African and African American Studies hosted a special screening of Beasts of No Nation, followed by a discussion and reception with author Uzodinma Iweala. Based on the novel of the same name, Beasts of No Nation, written and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, tells the story of a young boy in a West African country who is forced to become a child soldier. Invisible Thread, formerly Witness Uganda, now playing Off Broadway

Invisible Thread, the musical formerly known as Witness Uganda, will open Off Broadway at Second Stage Theatre on Friday, October 31st and run through December 27th. Remembering James F. Rothenberg ’68, M.B.A. ’70

James F. Rothenberg ’68, M.B.A. ’70, a member of the Harvard Corporation since 2004 and the University’s treasurer from 2004 to 2014, as well as benefactor of the Center for African Studies’ Maru-a-Pula Internship Program, died unexpectedly Tuesday, apparently of a heart attack. He was 69.

Elkins Named Inaugural Oppenheimer Faculty Director of the Center for African Studies

Professor Caroline Elkins, Founding Director of the Center for African Studies, has been named the Oppenheimer Faculty Director of the Center for African Studies at Harvard University, in honor of Jonathan and Jennifer (BA 1989 and JD 1993) Oppenheimer. They are long-time supporters of Africa-related initiatives at Harvard, and are also strong advocates of increasing opportunities for African scholars.

Three MaP Students Placed in Top Fifteen of 2015 De Beers English Olympiad

The Center for African Studies is pleased to announce that three Maru-a-Pula (MaP) students - Vamika Sinha, Tawanda Mulalu and Nandini Kochar - have ranked in the top 15 of the 2015 De Beers English Olympiad. This prestigious English Language and Literature competition takes place annually and receives over 7000 entries from high schools throughout South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique. Maru-a-Pula is the only school in this year's competition to place three candidates in the top 15.
