Departure of Obenewa Amponsah (Center for African Studies - Africa Office)

January 16, 2019

Dear Friends of the Center for African Studies,

I write to announce that Obenewa Amponsah has stepped down from her role as Executive Director of the Center for African Studies, Africa Office to pursue a PhD.

During her time with CAS, Obenewa was instrumental in the launch of our Africa Office in Johannesburg, South Africa. Opened in May 2017, the office is Harvard University’s first cross-disciplinary area-studies center in Sub-Saharan Africa. The partnerships created by the office and its programmatic activities have positioned CAS and the broader Harvard community with opportunities to deepen collaborations with African institutions and scholars as well as strengthen ties with Harvard alumni throughout the continent.

We wish to express our sincerest appreciation for Obenewa’s contributions to CAS, and thank her for her commitment to growing the Center’s presence in Africa and beyond. We wish her all the best in this next chapter.
