Departure of Lerato Motaung

April 30, 2019

Dear Friends of the Center for African Studies,

I write to announce that Lerato Motaung has stepped down from her role as Program Manager of the Center for African Studies, Africa Office.

Lerato has been with CAS since 2016, and was instrumental in establishing Harvard University’s first cross-disciplinary area-studies center in Sub-Saharan Africa. Launched in May 2017, the office has played a pivotal role in engaging Harvard University with scholars and alumni across the African continent. During her time at CAS, Lerato helped develop and implement the INSPIRE program, which brings talented underprivileged rising high school juniors and seniors from African schools to Harvard’s two-week pre-college summer program. She also supported the Harvard South African Fellowship Program for mid-career professionals educationally disadvantaged by past laws and resource allocations in South Africa. Her contributions were recognized by the Faculty of Arts & Sciences when CAS was awarded the Dean’s Distinction Team Award in Spring 2018.

We wish Lerato all the best with her future endeavors, and thank her for her commitment and many contributions to CAS. All of us at team CAS will miss working alongside her in support of CAS’ mission.

Regards,
Alex Taylor
Director of Administration and Finance (Interim)
