Center for African Studies Awarded Department of Education Grants

September 6, 2018

The Center for African Studies has been awarded designation as a National Resource Center (NRC) in African Studies by the U.S. Department of Education, a designation that CAS has had since 2010. The Center was also awarded a Foreign Languages and Area Studies (FLAS) grant in addition to the NRC grant.

With this support, from 2018 through 2022, CAS can continue to provide academic year and summer support for students who wish to study one of the 45+ African languages offered by the African Languages Program – which makes Harvard the home to the largest African languages program. Harvard University will maintain its designation as a nationally recognized resource center for African Studies. The NRC grant provides opportunities and resources for African Studies education, research, and knowledge in the Harvard community and beyond.

Some of these activities include:

  • Provide grants enabling students to study African languages
  • Support student group’s Africarelated activities
  • Collaborate with colleges in the Boston area on African Studies
  • Host a variety scholarly events of including our African Studies Workshop Series

The Center for African Studies looks forward to continuing to broaden public and scholarly awareness about Africa, African experiences, and African perspectives.
