The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), which is the driver, repository, and embodiment of the annual Black History Month designated the 2021 theme as “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity”. For an African audience, the starting point is to pose the question: what is Black History Month and why should be celebrated? Thus, to commemorate this year’s series of events, the partner organizations want to sensitize Africans on the meaning of Black History while at the same time unpacking the year’s theme. Discussions issues will include the intersection of African Americans and Africa or Africans, the black family globally as an idea and a practice, and the concept of the black family as constituting many yet the same people.
