The Islamic Africa Seminar (IAS) will be hosting its second meeting this Monday 11 November at 6:00 in Barker Center room 114. This week we will be discussing theories of Islam and/in Africa through three short essays:

  • Soares, Benjamin. “Notes on the Anthropological Study of Islam in Africa.” Culture And Religion. 1.2 (2000).
  • Hanretta, Sean. “Muslim Histories, African Societies: The Venture of Islamic Studies in Africa.” Journal of African History. 46 (2005).
  • Reese, Scott. “Islam in Africa/Africans and Islam.” Journal of African History. 55 (2014).

[The essays are available here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Mi5tqsQf9bCPZiF60xdpo2UHV_psbDnQ ]

We are planning for a lively discussion over whether Islamicate, Islamic, or African Islam are useful distinctions in thinking about the field. As always all disciplines, backgrounds, and engagements with the field are warmly welcomed. Dinner will be served - please RSVP (msteele@fas.harvard.edu) to help with planning.
