Neil Roos is a professor in the History Department and Director of the Postgraduate School at University of the Free State, South Africa. He will be presenting “Work and ideology in the apartheid civil service, 1948‐1961: The Public Service Commission and the rule of regulation”. The discussant this week will be Loren Landau, a Henry J. Leir Chair in Migration Studies based at the Tufts University Fletcher School and the Feinstein International Centre. He was previously the director of the African Centre for Migration & Society at Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa.

A week in advance, the presenter’s paper will be circulated through the Harvard African Studies Workshop listserv. It is assumed that everyone has read the paper before the workshop. After presentation and commentary, Workshop attendees are invited to engage in critique and discussion, under the moderation of the Workshop Chair.
