Nina Sylvanus is an Associate Professor of anthropology at Northeastern University. She received her doctoral training in anthropology and African Studies from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris and taught in the anthropology department at Reed College before joining Northeastern. Her research and teaching has focused on the social life of objects, the role of materiality, technology, and gender in the production of culture and economy; and, more recently, on the relationship between supply chain capitalism, container logistics and labor. She will present Harboring the Future: The Togolese Techno-Port, Governance, and Global Economics in West Africa. Discussant: Susan Cook.
A week in advance, the presenter’s paper will be circulated through the Harvard African Studies Workshop listserv. It is assumed that everyone has read the paper before the workshop. After presentation and commentary, Workshop attendees are invited to engage in critique and discussion, under the moderation of the Workshop Chairs.
