African Studies Workshop Featuring Michael Ralph

Michael Ralph  teaches in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis and the School of Medicine at New York University. His research combines history and politics with medical anthropology through an explicit focus on debt, slavery, insurance, forensics, and incarceration. Michael holds a BA in Africana Studies from Morris Brown College and a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. He will present Martyr Certificate: Death, Sacrifice, and Legitimacy in Eritrea.  Discussant: Paul Clark.

A week in advance, the presenter’s paper will be circulated through the Harvard African Studies Workshop listserv. It is assumed that everyone has read the paper before the workshop.  After presentation and commentary, Workshop attendees are invited to engage in critique and discussion, under the moderation of the Workshop Chairs.
