September 23 - The Role of Digital Health & Telemedicine.

An April 2020 Lancet report declared Sub-Saharan Africa “the new breeding ground for global digital health,” citing possibilities for technology to connect patients and providers, detect counterfeit pharmaceuticals, and detect and predict the spread of disease through AI. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need for healthcare providers to offer digital services to patients under lockdown orders and observing physical distancing measures. Likewise, technology is critical to contact tracing, modeled on efforts taken in response to Ebola and Lassa fever and lauded as one of the essential steps in reopening economies prior to the deployment of a widely available vaccine. Contact tracing apps that rely on wi-fi connections or cell phone data to determine an individual’s whereabouts have raised privacy concerns, as has the proliferation of telemedicine. The panel will explore the Lancet report’s findings, discuss contact tracing as a response strategy and privacy concern, and interrogate the challenges and opportunities of digital health and telemedicine.
