The Harvard University Center for African Studies is committed to cultivating the next generation of Africanists, African leaders and scholars. Everything we do helps to broaden public and scholarly awareness about Africa, African experiences and perspectives. To achieve this goal, we act as a University-wide nexus for Africanist research and teaching, we connect Harvard’s Africanists with institutional partners on the Continent, we support and promote the enrollment of African students at Harvard, we facilitate inter-faculty research and teaching on Africa, we offer a robust schedule of events for the Harvard community and the general public, and we fund African language training programs and student travel/research grants and internships. The Center for African Studies maintains a wide range of collaborations with universities and other educational institutions across Africa, and our office in Johannesburg, South Africa, spearheads initiatives on the African continent.

**Year in Review 2024-2025**

In October 2025, we launched 2024–2025 Harvard University Center for African Studies’ Year in Review, covering the period *July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025.*

This year marked the Center’s 10th Anniversary, a milestone we celebrated through rich intellectual convenings and reflections on our history. It was also the first year under the leadership of Dr. Zoe Marks, the Oppenheimer Faculty Director, who is stewarding the Center into its next decade of growth and impact. Our 100+ faculty affiliates, fellows, students, and partners continue to shape not only African futures but global ones. From inventing breakthrough biotechnology to monitor and cure malaria, to analyzing how artificial intelligence is transforming business, banking, and society, their work spans disciplines and continents. Harvard-led research collaborations are strengthening national scientific capacity and academic networks across Lagos, Dar es Salaam, Cape Town, Tunis, and beyond. The Center has proudly supported over 30 student organizations advancing educational and cultural programming related to Africa, while our student research and travel awards have enabled professional-quality projects in nearly 20 countries.

There is much more to share in the pages that follow. With 55 African countries, 12 Harvard Schools, and an intertwined vision for the future, we are just getting started.
