Remembering James F. Rothenberg ’68, M.B.A. ’70

July 22, 2015

James F. Rothenberg ’68, M.B.A. ’70, a member of the Harvard Corporation since 2004 and the University’s treasurer from 2004 to 2014, as well as benefactor of the Center for African Studies’ Maru-a-Pula Internship Program, died unexpectedly Tuesday, apparently of a heart attack. He was 69.

This unexpected news has struck the Center for African Studies with sadness and grief. Mr. Rothenberg was an early champion of the Center’s mission to provide meaningful experiences on the continent for Harvard College students, and for that, we are forever grateful. His commitment and generosity has allowed for significant impact on lives across the globe, most markedly in endowing the Maru-a-Pula Internship Program. Each year, program alumni marvel at the influence this experience has had on their understanding of Botswana, Africa, and the world, while cherishing the relationships built with their students that flourish long after their time in Botswana. This lasting influence is best expressed through the interns’ own words.

“I left Botswana a different person from what I was before, changed by two months of sights, struggles, and triumphs, and students who questioned and strived…The impact of this program doesn’t end with the summer, but continues on, often changing the trajectory of some students’ lives as they start to consider higher education…”

– Bethlehem Lema, Maru-a-Pula Summer 2014

“As someone who has never lived abroad, I didn’t know what to expect when I began my journey…It was incredibly meaningful experience, motivating me to take classes in education policy and stay involved with education after college.”

– Daniel Ki, Maru-a-Pula Summer 2013

“Being at MaP taught me so much about the world around me, about myself, and about who I wanted to be, none of which would have been possible without your generous donation.”

– Have Jones, Maru-a-Pula Summer 2014

“Through the students and staff at MaP, I was able to cultivate a fuller picture of the story and history behind the success of Bostwana… I have come away with lasting friendships with fellow interns and with students at Maru-a-Pula, as well as greater understanding of what it means to teach and be taught.”

– Alice Hyde, Maru-a-Pula Summer 2013

These reflections from program alumni could fill pages and pages, articulating the same deep appreciation for—and the lasting impact of—the opportunity Mr. Rothenberg’s generosity afforded. Undoubtedly, his legacy lives on in countless ways because of the man he was, and his dedication to Harvard and far beyond. For us, his light will shine through in the Harvard students that participate in the Maru-a-Pula Internship Program each year, the students they mentor in Botswana, and the Center staff who work passionately to realize his vision for this program.
