CAS Undergraduate Summer Grants

The Committee on African Studies offers funding to Harvard undergraduate students traveling to Africa for thesis research, internships, volunteer work or study abroad. Grants require a minimum stay of six weeks in Africa. Our grant awards are limited and intended to cover round-trip travel and a modest stipend.

Preference will go to students who have taken coursework in African Studies, have experience in the region and/or have language experience related to Africa. With research applications, preference will be given to graduate students and senior level undergraduates working on thesis preparation.

Applications for 2013 CAS Undergraduate Summer Grants are due Friday, February 15th by 3:00pm.  Students should submit their application through the CARAT system, but additionally, the supplemental pieces of the application will be due in paper to the CAS office in CGIS South, Room 403. Applications received after the 3pm deadline or missing any component of the application will not be considered. PLEASE DO NOT STAPLE!

You will need to turn in one set of each of the items listed below. Please do not use staples!

1. Completed CARAT application form at https://asperin.fas.harvard.edu/carat - after completing please print out a copy and turn this in with each of the items below, in this order.

2. 750 word proposal

3. Unofficial transcript copy

4. Current resume

5. Detailed itinerary

6. Two letters of reference

7. Letter of Support from Sponsoring Organization (Only if applying for internship)

Summer FLAS Fellowships are available for intensive language study only, and are open to both graduate and undergraduate students.
